Depending on your location and available grid power will determine your system requirements. I currently have a small hotel running off-the-grid, just to the north of you in Mexico. The system is a 3,600 watt solar array with a wind turbine and a 25kw diesel backup generator. 48 volt Xantrex inverter.

Started with just solar.However, our busy time of year (Dec and Jan) is the lowest solar days. Wind works perfect to supplement.

You can live very well off-the-grid. Most of our guest are not even aware - expect for the signs in the rooms about conserving water and electric.

The best approach is to make a list of your what you desire to run (and see what you can live without). Lots of use of CFL and LED lighting.

Almost forgot, also run a small 110 watt panel, lighting charge controller and two batteries for all of the 12 volt low pressure sodium exterior security lights. *Reason for this - hurricanes - for safety the main system is shut down - this provides area security lighting.

When planning construction on a flat roof - good idea to have high enough parapet walls to protect panel during high winds. During the summer (hurricane) season all panels are secured down at less than a 5 degree angle for best solar and wind protection. During winter panels are raised to the higher angle.
